Hi all,

I just signed up here and have been reading through all the posts and enjoying everyone's smilies.

1. First, I wanted to say that this is a fantastic site and that I love everyone's smilies.
2. This site seems to have a nice welcoming and encouraging atmosphere, which makes a nice change from some of the boards that I have visited where people are always criticising and "posturing."

So here is my first smiley.... not the first that I smiley made, but it the first one that I feel comfortable showing.

It is only a remake, because I have been doing remakes at the moment to get the hang of things.
Also, I am still learning to use the drawing/animation programs I have.

But I hope to be doing original smilies eventually...

I actually have a notebook of original smiley ideas that I am going to attempt (in time).

Kind Regards,

BradLee

Hiya BradLee (or is "Brad" ok with you?)

You seem to have the basics well in hand, but (you knew that was coming) you might want to work on that smiley a little more.

In the frames where her pom-poms are low, you can see the little pink stubs of her arms sticking out the tops. Personally, I'd just get rid of the arms all together - much in the same way Laie* did with his.

Keep at it. You obviously have potential. And you have all those ideas waiting to be brought to life. good.gif

Brad is fine.
It's not my real name anyway, only my screen handle.

True. I can edit that out.
It's a throwback from the one-to-one copy, but it certainly would look better without it.

Thanks, I appreciate the comments and suggestions.

EDIT: Okay here are two new versions:

Arms fixed:

Arms removed:

I'm not so sure that I like the one without the arms?
I think I will need to work on the face expressions next, because it seems too busy?

Cheers,

BradLee

Funny is okay.
Many people are too serious these days anyway.

I did remove the original smiley and replaced it with the updated one.
Should I not have?

Really? I am still not sure...
I am probably so used to the first version that it looks strange to see it differently.

Also since I have spent so much time on it, it is getting hard to look at it objectively
I think I probably need to put it aside for the time being, then pick it up again another time with a set of fresh eyes.

And now the eye movements are frustrating me because they move too much. sad.gif

Thanks for the welcome.
Eventually I hope to have many more works to share (as time permits).

It is a little difficult to understand the conversation when the image being discussed has disappeared. wink.gif

So I have replaced the with a replica of your original image.

Thanks Laie,

I still need to tweak the "crazy eyes" a bit.
I think that they probably move a bit too much?

P.S. Just Cuz, Doc, Ninapooh, iamjustme and Laie, I have decided to ditch the arms... good.gif
Well, it was a pretty unanimous poll.

I think that I had looked at it so many times before, that it seemed "strange" to not see it the usual way.

Regards,

BradLee

I've been trying to fix the cheerleader up, but I am still having some problems with the eye movements...
Can somebody please help me with this or offer some pointers?

Kind regards,

BradLee

BTW The post edit button seems to be missing for me, so I couldn't modify my last post to add this.
Seems to be there on this post though...

The animation is a little more than two seconds long. Having her blink ONCE in that time span is probably enough.

If you want to include some of the other eye movements, you would likely need to multiply the number of frames by 2 or 3 in order to keep her from appearing spastic.

Thanks JC.
I couldn't figure out why it wasn't working.

I like it MUCH better now with the fewer movements,
So I don't think that I will bother to extend the length.

The way you have simplified it has given it some extra charm.

Do you think it needs anything else done?
I am quite happy with it as-is.
But you seem to have an instinct for this, which I am still developing.

When looking at the image in an enlarged view, I noticed that some of the pixels change color from frame to frame. This is likely the result of your optimization settings. What animation software are you using?

Another thing that would be part of a finalization process would be to trim the canvas. Ideally it should have ONE transparent pixel on each side beyond any object. Excess pixels mean a larger filesize. Pay attention to movement between frames though - don't crop out a moving object.

Lastly - and this is just tweaking - consider changing the outline of her hair bow from black to a dark pink. It just looks nicer IMO.

Okay I'll give that a look over and fix it up.

I'm not... I'm only using Paint.Net to make the gifs and Easy Gif Animator for the sequences.

Can do.

I think I orignally cropped it right to the edges as you can see in the diagonal pom-poms frame.
But I have been reading here over the last few days that some browsers are having trouble displaying the image properly when this is the case,

I agree.

Argh I have to go to bed... I only have a couple of hours before I have to get back up for Uni.
And this is not the first time this week that I have lost track of time while reading the forums here.

Take care,

BradLee

I've never used that program, but Laie does - he could probably assist you with which optimization/compression settings work best. Keep in mind though that English is not his first language - though I think he interprets wonderfully well. good.gif

wink.gif Yes, that's why I said to have ONE transparent pixel on each edge. In this case, you'll actually need to ADD to the width.
The optimal canvas size for this animation would be 58x38 pixels. It won't really have much effect on the filesize this time, but could on future projects.
