For my second smiley, here is a chicken dance smiley I made...

Most proud of: The chirping hand action.
Also happy with: The timing and cuts for all of the sequences.
Least happy with: The twisting "tail-feather" action.
Still working on: The facial expression (eyes and mouth)

The chirping hand action took me ages to draw...
I drew lots of hands over several days because I couldn't find any other smiley hand actions that were like it.
Also, trying to reproduce the hand action in only a few small pixels was a real challenge.
I know now why most smiley artists often either leave out the hands or only draw them as yellow circles.

The timing wasn't too hard...
Since I used to be a musician, I just worked out which beats each frame had to occur on.

The twisting...
I tried a bunch of different movements and this was the best of the bunch. Although, I don't think it's that great.

The arms flapping...
Were "borrowed" from another chicken smiley.

The facial expression???
Is probably a little boring ATM with the same facial expression, so I still need to work out what I want to do here with regards to movement.

So now...
I am probabaly the stage where I am ready for suggestions, if anyone has any comments or ideas for improvements.

Regards,

BradLee

Looks good so far, Brad. good.gif

I can make suggestions for enhancements, but I want you to know there is nothing wrong with it as is.
  1. Can you add some sort of vertical movement to the body as he's flapping?
It's been a while since I've seen the dance performed, but I was thinking people squatted during that part.
No, now that I think about it - the squatting is during the 'tail shake'
  2. Can you make the hands move sideways during the 'tail-shake'?
It would add to the illusion that he's turning his whole body - not just his head.
  3. Can you give him some hair?
This may sound simple enough, but will be more complicated than you might think if you do it convincingly.

As you've already said, you should add changes to the facial expressions (mouth) and have him blink at least once during the loop.

Thanks for your reply Just Cuz,
The "tail-shake" action is the one that I am least happy with...

I've tried about 20 sequences for this action alone using:

Different hand types,
Different hand movements,
Different body movements,
Different timings for the hand movements,
And different timings for the body movements.

You'd be surprised how many ways you can make a smiley do the twist. wink.gif

I was going a bit stir-crazy just looking at the differences, which were often only subtle or negligable.
In fact looking back over them this morning, I had to look really hard at some of them to even see any differences.

I will give it another attempt though to see if I can make it better.

Sure. It does look a little bald.

Yep. Facial movements are something that I really have trouble animating.
So it is usually the last thing on my "things to do" list for any smiley
But I will fix it up.

Cheers,

BradLee

That's cute, Brad good.gif It looks like you're having fun.

I remember when I used to work (computer helpdesk) -- staying on the computer so long that my vision started to go crazy.gif

I just had an idea -- this is probably way off from where you're trying to get to -- but, did you ever think of "magical chicken feathers"?? I was thinking that maybe the guy gets so INTO his chicken dance that he magically (for an instant) grows a real chicken feather tail that he shakes just a few times!!??

Keep up the good work.

Thanks Barb,

When I originally started making this smiley, I gave him big chicken eyes and a beak...

But it didn't work because the eyes needed to be too close to the top of the head
And it ended up turning the smiley into an actual chicken, rather than a smiley.
Also, the beak got in the way and ruined the "chicken dance" element and turned it into a chicken.

What I am going to do eventually though, is stick a "red rubber thing" (not sure what it is called) on his head.
Kind of like how Foghorn Leghorn does this with a rubber glove in the WB cartoon to make the Chicken Hawk think that the dog is a chicken biggrin.gif

yahoo.gif a very promissing start, cannot wait for the final version. good.gif

I'm not a chicken dance expert but the tailfeather action gets much clearer when the kolobok shows his backside.
maybe some "la-la-lala-lala-la singing"lip movement will add chichen dance-feel to the kolobok

If you're still working to improve the wagging, try something like this:
It's similar to the motion Aiwan used in one of his dancing koloboks:

Thanks for the suggestion doc,

I already tried to do a twisting motion more like this one yahoo.gif
While I like the action better, the problem is that is that the chicken dance is very fast, and this leaves only a small amount of time to do the action.
So if I cut down the number of frames used for the action, then the twisting looks too fast (and silly).
Maybe I could try making the twists less extreme, by having the smiley not twist as far around?

QUOTE

Eye and mouth movments are on the agenda for after I have the body action right.
Otherwise I would have to redo all of the facial expressions again after I change the body movements.
I do agree though that he is too expression-less at present.

Appreciate your input Just Cuz,

I already tried wiggling the body,
But I am not sure that it works with the eyes staying stationary like that.
Perhaps I need to try wiggling body WITH the eyes?

I'm stumped ATM,
So I think I will leave it on hold and work on something different until I feel inspired again.

Best wishes,

BradLee

I meant to mention that the wings I used are from Snoozer's awesome chicken smiley.

But I can't add that to my original post because the edit function has timed out.

So BIG thumbs up to Snoozer. good.gif

Respect,

I'm still working on him... I haven't forgotten.

After trying a bazillion different ways to get my smiley to twist properly, I had an epiphany last night...

Hooray.
Now all I need to fix are the eyes, mouth and hair.

Best wishes to everyone here,

BradLee

Just Cuz,

Do you make the whole body move L+R like this?

The example above doesn't do it for me with the eyes staying stationary but the body moving...
So I might make the eyes turn further to look like more extreme movement?

Should I leave in the up/down motion?
I actually prefer it to the original

BTW your little smiley is funky.
F to the U, to the N, to the K, to the Y

I will try some more variations and post.

I only suggested you do "something like" that - you needn't make it exactly that way.

Sure, the "squatting" is part of the dance too.
Perhaps you could move the body left & right slightly during that part?
