Just thought it'd be nice to get to know each other.. coz I don't speak or read russian.. sad.gif

Anyways, I'm actually Australian and I'm currently living and working in Canada biggrin.gif
--------------------------------

----------------------

Yeah, good theme. smile.gif I would be glad to know something about you all.

Well. I live in the North. Close to Polar Circle. And I work within the Polar Circle biggrin.gif. Winter is cold and dark, much snow, the Northern (polar) Lights. Summer is chilly, mosquitos, midges and it's light as a day-time. There I live. I really love my town and the North. I love winter and frosts.

Good morning, or (perhaps good afternoon or good night).

I am from Spain and I live in Barcelona, a sunny mediterranean city. This summer is hot, to much hot and dry IPB Image. We are waiting for the rain and a cool weather but tourists only want sun and beach.

hi

live most of my life in Europe as a kid, 3 yrs in Greece and 6 yrs in Spain, didnt learn to speak it, figure i wasnt going back, no reason to learn it, guess i should have biggrin.gif

I now live in Houston, Texas, been here about 8 yrs now, weather is great, 4 seasons how i like it, prefer the cold more, but i love the water also, spent most of my time jetskiing when not on computer.

I've always lived in the US (except when travelling abroad for work for periods of time). I've lived the last 4.5 years in Florida (Tampa Bay area 1 hour west of Orlando/Disney). We have the hot sun, many beaches, and occasional hurricane scares in the area. I really like the area, the hurricanes are the only negative side in my opinion. Before Florida I lived my entire life in Michigan where there are four seasons and we would get hot hot weather as well as cold cold weather. Also I lived near the birthplace of the automobile (Detroit).
-------------------

Hi everyone! I'm from Canada. The winters are usually quite cold and long here, too, but that doesn't bother me at all. I love winter. As a kid, I lived in all sorts of places (Monica: Cologne! good.gif ), because my dad was a journalist, but Canada has always been home. smile.gif

Well hello all. The names' Mark, I live in New Jersey, U.S. of A. I've been lurking here for a few days and decided to join due to the sheer quality of the smilies here! I need to thank all of the authors and creators! drinks.gif

There's an AWFUL lot of RUSSIAN ONLY posts in these ENGLISH ONLY sections
being spoken, can ya help a brother out??? rofl.gif

English is my only language, so I have a tendency to use a lot of slang...sorry! (I fixed some just now)

I can only speak the Italian curse words, and a few in German, though the latter is from working for a DE based Pharmaceutical company for a few years... (Nice of them to teach me the bad stuff, aint it? )

I hate to even SAY that I created a few smilies of my own. I would more refer to them as a "needed, animated gif, created quickly and horribly" then smilies/emoticons.

Lastly, what exactly IS a Kolobok?

MGJ

Posted by: dilia Nov 27 2006, 08:12 PM

hi there
Kolobok is a character of old russian folk fairy tale ( kolobok is a sort of pie, made in ball form) . Aiwan is original author and owner of these smileys and this website. These smilies got name from Aiwan's wife, when she seen them first time. Yellow circles with eyes and mouths were looking like kolobok in the books and she called them koloboks. Aiwan liked this name for his smileys and since then they are having this name.

Hey bro drinks.gif

you’ve come to the Russian site created by a very talented and honest Russian artist. His name is Aiwan. He's my good friend. He can't provide you with clear English by himself, but Dilia can do it pretty well. So, the mane things are translated by her in both ways.

KOLOBOK is one of Aiwan's trademarks and it's really come from Russian ferry tales about round bread and the old couple with no kids. So...

There is English forum room where people from many countries can understand each other easy. Join the club and will be together.

Posted by: Aiwan Nov 27 2006, 10:34 PM

Hi wink.gif
The kolobok is a famous character of a really old russian fairy tale, for very little kids. http://www.rustoys.com/Kolobok.htm

http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Nook/9945/kolobok.htm

Posted by: MarGinJoey Nov 28 2006, 12:39 AM

OK so now I get it! An old fairy tale. Thanks for the education, I feel much better knowing I can now safely make it a "favorite" without my Russian co-worker keeping a watchful eye on me! lol.gif

As for English/Russian forum, my apologies, I phrased my comments wrong. I meant to say that in the section known as For English Users I had spotted quite a few replies in RUSSIAN with no translation... was just playing there..... no harm inteneded! Just a little forum fun!

Anyway, thanks for the 'welcome aboard'. While I cannot translate anything, I can fix the broken English I see. I won't point out any of it because it's simply not polite, however, If I'm asked nicely I could be swayed... dirol.gif

(God I hope this translates correctly, I could easily look like an idiot here)
So, is anyone using a Russian/English translator webpage??? Post away!

Occasionally, if I come upon one of Aiwan's posts before dilia or Dooris has translated, I'll run it through BabelFish.

Unfortunately it can't do the job half as well as they, and usually doesn't make much sense. nea.gif

QUOTE( Mark)

See... BabelFish tells me that means "Without the transfer!"

ImTranslator says it's "Without translation!"

Both are kinda jibberish - unless that's what you meant to say. pardon.gif

Posted by: dilia Nov 28 2006, 08:58 PM

"Without the transfer!" , "Without translation!"
both are correct, but usually this phrase means "without translation".

Posted by: Just Cuz Nov 29 2006, 02:40 AM

Ok.

Well in that case it's still a sentence fragment and doesn't mean a whole lot to me. pardon.gif

Posted by: MarGinJoey Nov 29 2006, 03:50 AM

So, what your saying is, "I like look an idiot", just as I predicted.

I guess "Goodbye" in English didn't translate over too well, hence it bombed with the "without translation" error.... I wish it warned me about it! My first Russian/English mistake! I kinda like it! rofl.gif

Thanks, and "goodbye"! biggrin.gif

Except in a few circumstances, smileys don't have nationalities - that's one of the great things about them.

Hmm.. not sure I understood that, so I'll say this.

The invite is open if you'd ever like a tour. We do not visit the city as much in the colder months. The three of us (+wife, son) love the city for dinner or an occasional horse-n-carriage ride around the area to take in the sites.

I can at least recommend restaurants and site-seeing destinations...... drinks.gif

Hello, I'm from New Jersey (the southern end). I'm so glad Spring is here. I am tired of the cold. I came across this site by accident about a month or so ago when I Googled "IPB smilies". I've known about Aiwan's koloboks for a few years now, but never knew he had a forum! pardon.gif I love all of the work I have seen here by Aiwan and the members who contribute some of the best smilies I've ever seen. I'm not good enough yet to make my own animated smilies. I have tried and balaam has tried to help me, but I just don't get it. I know how to animate, it's the GDK I have trouble with. It's too frustrating. I have SO many ideas, but not good enough to execute them yet. I'm slowly learning a little more and hopefully, I'll be able to contribute some smilies at some point in time.

Hi, Polly wink.gif

Posted by: Aurora Jun 13 2007, 07:05 PM

Hi everyone,

my real name is Astrid and I live in the southwest of Germany not far from Switzerland and France.

I accidentally came across this forum a few days ago when I googled a "poker" smiley and was instantly fascinated by all those wonderful smilies you have all created. good.gif

I saw a couple of the Kolobok-style smilies before but I never knew where they came from - until I got here.

I was going to ask about the origin of the Kolobok-style but I have read this entire thread and found Aiwan's link to the Russian folk tale.

Actually, the Kolobok is similar to a fairy tale I know in German: "Der dicke fette Pfannkuchen" (The big, fat pancake). I looked it up in Wikipedia and found out that these tales are related smile.gif they only seem to differ in the way they get eaten, in who they get eaten by and also in what they are made of.
See for yourself (sorry, only German pardon.gif ) http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vom_dicken_fetten_Pfannekuchen.
Wikipedia also provides a link to English versions of this tale: http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/type2025.html

We're all from different countries but in a way we all seem to share some kind of "Kolobok" tale. Just like all of you (now I'm talking of all those talented artists creating the little "Koloboks", first of all, Aiwan, of course) are from different countries and are sharing those fantastic smilies with all the others, including the non-artists (like myself).

I guess that's enough for the beginning.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

The bad news: I don't have the slightest idea of Russian, soooooooooooorrrry.

Posted by: Aiwan Jun 13 2007, 09:02 PM

"Kolobok" simply title, I have chosen itself such name style my work. Than differs KOLOBOK from smile is a complicated way to say wink.gif Kolobok's alive and they have a soul! They good and merry and present the people a joy. Excuse me for my terrible english pardon.gif

There's one thing to say about your English: it's 1000 % better than my Russian
No reason to say sorry. You're trying to communicate in a language other than your mother tongue for the benefit of others, who don't understand Russian - and that's what counts (in my opinion), not how perfect you are at it.

I understood that you are referring to your artwork as "Kolobok-style", I just thought it was interesting to learn about the "origin" of the word "Kolobok" and that there seem to be similar "tales" all around the world.

I also know what you mean when you say Koloboks are alive and have a soul. That is because they are made by people and from what I see, you are all putting your heart and soul into it.

Hi everyone, I'm from Perpignan in the south of France, not far from the Spanish border. It's a small region also called North Catalonia (hi Laie, and visca catalunya ! yahoo.gif ) and it's a great place to live, with a wonderful climate, between the sea and the mountain.

Bonjour FinouCat!

Does your username translate into English in any way? I'm just curious about its meaning.

Speaking of English (or is that 'Speaking in English'), you've apparently had very good schooling.
I'm envious of all the multilingual members we have here.

I've been in Perpignan and surrounding areas lots of times over the past eight years. Argeles, Argeles sur Mer, Elne, Elne Plage, Vias, Vias Plage, Portiragnes, Portiragnes Plage, Agde, Cap d'Agde and a bit further up the road in Aiges Mortes, Arles, Nimes, Beziers, Valraz, Valraz Plage.

I absolutely love that part of the world and if I ever get enough money to my name I am going to buy myself a little house somewhere there live happily ever after.

What a beautiful area to live, lucky you good.gif

Hi Ninapooh, yeah, I think it's the best place in the world. i-m_so_happy.gif Actually some of the places you mention are a bit too much... northern for me. biggrin.gif No no no, I'm not crazy, but the people from here consider that even Narbonne and Montpellier (Narbonne is only 40 km of Perpignan) are in the "north", because they are past the border of Catalonia... ok, we are weird. mosking.gif Anyway it's not that crazy, everything is quite different here from the rest of the region. I wouldn't leave my little bit of France for anything in the world !
No, JustCuz, my nickname couldn't be translated in English. Well, the "cat' part IS English, it refers to my cat, and Finou is short for Sophie. Thanks for the compliment by the way (I'll have to learn how to quote, I'm still learning). Yes I think I was lucky to go to a great university with awesome professors. I have an English degree and I'm an English teacher, that explains everything. wink.gif

Posted by: Katinka Aug 14 2007, 11:45 PM

I would like to introduce my home town to you.

I live in Hungary, in a town called Pécs, which is the fifth largest city of Hungary, located in the south-west of the country. Here, where I put the blue dot.

This area has been inhabited since ancient times, with the oldest archaeological findings being 6000 years old. Before the Roman era the place was inhabited by Celts. In the early 2nd century, when Western Hungary was a province of the Roman Empire (named Pannonia), the town was called Sopiane. In the first half of the 4th century Sopianae became an important Christian city. The first Christian cemeteries, dating back to this age, are inscribed on the World Heritage List. By the end of the century Roman rule weakened in the area, mostly due to attacks by Barbarians and Huns. Pécs, however, became an important religious centre and episcopal seat. The town's history from that time on was very eventful, so I would like to mention only a few interesting details.

After the Battle of Mohács (1526) in which the invading Ottoman army defeated the armies of King Louis II, the armies of Suleiman occupied and pillaged Pécs. After occupying the city the Ottomans fortified it and turned it into a real Ottoman city. The Christian churches were turned into mosques; Turkish baths and minarets were built, Quran schools were founded, there was a bazaar in place of the market. The city was ruled by Muslim officials according to the Sharia law. For a hundred years the city was an island of peace in a land of war. In 1686, the armies went to free Pécs.

A Turkish Church, now functions as a Catholic Church, keeping its unique, original built.

At the end of World War I Baranya county was occupied by Serbian troops, and it was not until August 1921 that Pécs could be sure that it remains part of Hungary.

During World War II Pécs suffered only minor damages.

Pécs has been selected to be the European Capital of Culture in 2010 sharing the title together with Essen and Istanbul. The city's motto will be: "The Borderless City".

Hi, Katinka

Thank you for the history lesson about your hometown. How do you pronounce "Pécs"?? Is it like 'pecks' or 'pakes'??

I love the pictures of the old buildings. The craftsmanship was unbelievable.

I'm Barbara -- The Moose. "The Moose" is a nickname from my son. He was playing with words: Ma - Ma - Ma - Moo - Moo -- "MOOSE". So ... I guess "Moose" is an affectionate nickname for Mama tender.gif

I live in Massachusetts in the United States -- about 10 miles northwest of Boston.

I like smilies, or Koloboks now. I have over 14,000 smilies on my computer -- I guess I *LOVE* them. They're all cataloged on my computer and I use GetSmile to keep the ones that I use most often organized.

It just amazes how much expression can show in those tiny, little Kolobok faces good.gif

I want to thank you all for welcoming us "Newbies". It's amazing to find so many people in the world who like the same small joys wink.gif

Thank you all for liking my home town! It is really a sweet place, but as every city it is getting bigger and the new territories, the modern buildings can't really fit that harmony the old city has. So, I try to get as much pics about the old, ancient town as I just can. Those pics you have seen were taken by a guy, called Robert Bublik (Bublik Rуbert in Hungarian). He is a young talented photographer. If you have a little time check his site. His photos are amazing, the ones featuring animals are really adorable. http://www.bublikum.hu/

Hello, dear Barbara! I love your nickname. It is so sweet! Nice to have you here! It really is a very unique place, so many kind people, good fun and not to mention the great artists around who take our breath away with all those lovely Koloboks they create. Oh, BTW, Pecs' approximate pronunciation is "Paych".

Thank you, dear Aiwan! Yes, I love Winter very much indeed. For me nothing can be more beautiful than snowflakes dancing in the light, the soft silence of those snowy nights. Fabulous! And, yes I am considered silly for loving cold and ice, but I don't care. I love it since my childhood! Long live Winter! And reindeers!

Thank you Ninapooh! I have been living in London for nearly two years and I could not really get used to that "mild" weather. Though it is comfortable not to have extremely hot days and cold ones, but in a way a bit boring, as well. To make myself more strange, what I loved most in London was the fog! I loved foggy nights. Reminded me all those books I read about Jack The Ripper, the "Sherlock times" and the Dungeon! I really love and miss London!

Posted by: ninapooh Aug 15 2007, 05:52 PM

We had nearly a week of thick fog earlier in the year. It was eerie and although it caused a lot of havoc in the country, I loved it. The one thing I miss though is SNOW. I LOVE snow, but you can't have everything I suppose. I attach a picture of the one and only day we had snow this year

Posted by: Katinka Aug 15 2007, 06:39 PM

Wow! One day of snow! Not much! But I must admit thanks to this global warming up, our wonderful winters are getting warmer and warmer every year!

I enjoy Nascar races (Indy-car and F1 just aren't as exciting) but I've never attended one in person.

Junior has never been one of my particular favorites.

I don't dislike him, but I'd much rather see, say, Jimmie Johnson or Tony Stewart in victory lane. clapping.gif

i grew up at the Indianapolis 500 the month of May was spent there... My bio dad supplied all of the Firestone jackets for the crews and speedway employees from 1965 thru 1969 ...
ive never been a fan of Indy car.. i know shame on me... vava.gif
but i love sprint car racing and my daughter grew up with Jeff Gordon at Bloomington Motor speedway...she attended all his sprint car races there and even got to go to his 16th birthday..
my daughter has been a Gordon fan for many years till she married her hubby and he is a Dale Jr fan....
now my daughter and grandson are Jr fans.... yahoo.gif
ive been an Earnhardt fan for many years clear back to the 70's...
but i will have to admit i have to cheer for Tony Stewart too cuz he's kinda the home town boy for me... yahoo.gif

i just love Nascar...Cup,Busch, and Truck series...

i love doing Daytona in Feb.. the beginning of the season... yahoo.gif
we are only about 65 miles South of Daytona so its not that far to go for a day of fun... good.gif

Hey all,

I'm from Oz...

No not that Oz... This one:

I've already made a few posts in the main forums, but Just Cuz suggested that I should stick my head in here and say "hi."

Um... I've been making smilies for about 2 weeks now...
Totally new to graphics, art, animation...
(I even failed art in high school)

I'm an IT student/nerd for my day job
But I am enjoying learning to make smileys ATM, and hope to be posting some of my own soon.

Cheers,

Since some time ago I try to do create little Koloboks - and I've learned a lot since I'm here.

Sorry, normally I don't speak or write in english - but I try and I hope you can understand what I intend to say.
All I can speak/write in englisch I've leaned by myself.

Thank you all. I hoped it might interest some of you. Of course, if I lived in a tropical climate and could dive coral reefs on a regular basis, the photos would be much more impressive. But wreck diving is fun, too - and it has an eery quality about it, especially when you know people died in that wreck and you see their tools and implements still lying on the bottom. *Shudder*
